Outdoor Umbrellas - FAQs

-
What is the difference between a market umbrella and a cantilever umbrella?
A market umbrella (centre-pole umbrella) has its pole in the centre of the canopy, passing through a table hole or sitting in a freestanding base at the table centre. Market umbrellas are the standard specification for cafe and restaurant dining tables — a 2.7m or 3m round or square canopy covers a 4-top or 6-top table. They are typically lower cost, easier to replace and the most common commercial dining umbrella specification.
A cantilever umbrella (side-post or offset umbrella) has its pole to the side, with the canopy arm extending overhead without obstructing the space below. Cantilever umbrellas suit lounge settings, tables without a centre hole, pool decks and areas where the canopy needs to be positioned to the side of the seating. They require a heavier, offset base and typically cost more than a market umbrella of equivalent size. Browse cantilever umbrellas and market umbrellas.

What does UPF 50+ mean for outdoor umbrellas?
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ means the fabric blocks 98% or more of UV radiation — both UVA and UVB. It is the highest standard rating for sun-protective textiles in Australia, equivalent to SPF 50+ sunscreen applied to the skin. All outdoor umbrella fabrics stocked by Outdoor Furniture Ideas are rated UPF 50+. The UPF rating applies to the fabric only — shade protection under the umbrella also depends on sun angle, canopy size and tilt. A tilting umbrella canopy maintains coverage as the sun moves in morning and afternoon positions.

How do I secure an outdoor umbrella in high winds?
All freestanding outdoor umbrellas should be closed and lowered when wind exceeds 30–40 km/h. An open umbrella acts as a sail and can be damaged or become a hazard at moderate wind speeds — no base is heavy enough to safely hold a large open canopy in high wind. For permanent outdoor positions, close and lower the umbrella at the end of each day as standard practice. For cafes and restaurant terraces, most operators close umbrellas at the end of service. Never leave a large umbrella open and unattended in an exposed position overnight.
-
What size outdoor umbrella do I need for my table?
As a general guide: a 2m x 2m square or 2.5m round umbrella covers a 2-top or small 4-top table. A 3m round or 2.5m x 2.5m square covers a standard 4-top outdoor dining table (80–90cm square) with overhang on all sides. A 3.5m round or 3m x 3m square covers a 6-top table. For a row of cafe tables on a terrace, individual 2m x 2m square umbrellas per table is the standard commercial specification. The canopy should extend at least 60cm past the table edge on each side for effective shade over seated diners.
-
How heavy does an outdoor umbrella base need to be?
Base weight requirements increase with umbrella diameter. As a guide: a 2–2.5m umbrella requires a minimum 20–25 kg base. A 3m umbrella requires 30–40 kg. A 3.5m+ or cantilever umbrella requires 50 kg or more — large cantilevers may need 80–100 kg. These are minimums for still conditions; in exposed or elevated positions, use a heavier base. For cantilever umbrellas, the base is offset from the canopy centre of gravity — follow the manufacturer's minimum base weight specification precisely and do not substitute a lighter base. Browse outdoor umbrella bases.

What fabrics are used in outdoor umbrellas and how durable are they?
The most common outdoor umbrella fabrics are solution-dyed acrylic and UV-coated polyester. Solution-dyed acrylic — used in the Billy Fresh range — is UV-stable, fade-resistant, water-resistant and mildew-resistant. The dye is incorporated into the fibre during manufacturing rather than surface-applied, so it does not fade under UV exposure over time. UV-coated polyester is more common in mid-range umbrellas — UV rated but the coating can degrade over multiple Australian summers. For commercial use or exposed positions, solution-dyed acrylic is the recommended specification for longevity. Browse the Billy Fresh umbrella range.
-
What is the difference between a commercial-grade and residential outdoor umbrella?
Commercial-grade outdoor umbrellas are specified for daily operational use: heavier gauge aluminium or steel frames (typically 48–60mm pole diameter versus 32–38mm residential), reinforced fabric attachment points, stronger ribs and canopy fabric rated for sustained UV and commercial cleaning cycles. Residential umbrellas are specified for occasional personal use and may not withstand the daily opening, closing and cleaning of a cafe or restaurant terrace. For hospitality venues, specify commercial grade — the frame and fabric service life under daily use is significantly longer than residential equivalents, and the total cost of ownership is lower over time.
-
How do I clean and store an outdoor umbrella?
Clean umbrella fabric with mild soap and warm water — rinse thoroughly and allow to dry fully before closing. Do not use bleach or solvent-based cleaners on acrylic fabrics, which degrade the UV-stabilising finish. For seasonal storage, close and lower the umbrella, dry thoroughly, and store in a cover bag or under cover. Inspect aluminium ribs and tightening mechanisms annually — replace worn fittings before each season. Commercial operators who leave umbrellas outdoors year-round should close them nightly and inspect the canopy attachment points and crank mechanism monthly.

How are outdoor umbrellas delivered?
We deliver outdoor umbrellas Australia-wide. Umbrellas are typically delivered flat-packed with the canopy, pole sections and fittings separately packaged. Assembly is straightforward — attach pole sections, insert through the base, open the canopy and adjust the tilt mechanism. Umbrella bases are heavy (20–100 kg depending on size) and arrive as a separate item — ensure assistance is available to move a large base on delivery. For commercial orders requiring multiple umbrella and base packages, contact our trade team to discuss delivery scheduling and site access.
